Issuing licenses in Northfield

The City of Northfield Clerk’s office, along with the Police Department, issues and enforces several licenses required by the city. The City of Northfield does not require general business licenses for most businesses, but does license certain business activities. Licenses required are listed below. Please allow a minimum of 45 days for processing most licenses.

Charitable Gambling License

A charitable gambling license requires City and Minnesota Gambling Control Board approval. 

Fee

The fee for a license is $25 per application and $50 for premises permits.

Application

Applications can be obtained through the Minnesota Gambling Control Board.

Concessions License

A concessions/miscellaneous license is required for the temporary sale of food and beverages on city property. Must be approved by the City Council (this excludes Defeat of Jesse James Days concessions). 

Fee

The fee for a license is $125 per application.

Fireworks Retail Sales License

A fireworks sale license is required for the sale of legal fireworks with or without other merchandise. 

Fee

The license fee is $125 for sale with other merchandise, and $350 for fireworks only.

Liquor Licenses

The City of Northfield provides liquor licenses for the types of liquor listed. 

  • On-Sale Intoxicating
  • Wine Liquor License
  • 3.2% On-Sale Malt Liquor License
  • Club liquor license
  • 3.2% Off-Sale Malt Liquor License
  • Temporary Liquor License
  • Sunday Liquor

Peddler’s and Solicitors License

A Peddler’s and Solicitors License is required for any person to engage in the business of peddler, solicitor or transient merchant within the city. Approval by the police chief.

Fees

  • Initial application for one day, for one individual: $30
  • Each additional day, up to five days: $7.50 per day
  • Each additional person authorized by the company license: $12 per day, up to five days
  • Annual permit: $60 for one individual; $12 for each additional person of that organization

Refuse License

A refuse license is required for transporting garbage or refuse for hire. Must be approved by the City Council.

Vehicle for Hire License

A vehicle for hire license is required for the conveyance of a passenger for hire upon any street or other public place of the city. Approval by the City Council.

Tobacco License

A tobacco license is required for the retail sale of tobacco. Vending machines are not allowed. Approval by City Council.

Edible Cannabinoid License

No person shall sell or offer to sell, directly or indirectly, on any pretense or by any device, edible cannabinoid products as part of a retail commercial transaction within the corporate limits of the City without first having obtained the required license from the City.

In addition to these documents, applicants need to include a Certificate of Insurance - General Liability and the annual prorated license fee of $1,125 for the license period of November 1, 2022 through July 31, 2023.
