Northfield is home to a well educated population, in which 25% have an associate degree, 28% have a bachelor’s degree, and 20% have a graduate or professional degree.
Students and faculty at Carleton College and St. Olaf College hail from Minnesota, the greater Midwest, across the country, and around the world. The colleges’ impact is also felt in the fact that close to 30% of Northfield’s population is between the ages of 18 and 24.

As of the 2010 census, the racial makeup of the city was 88.8% white, 3.5% Asian, 1.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.0% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race accounted for 8.4% of the population.
